Find the answers to the most common questions asked about taking drum lessons.
Not at all, you are more than welcome to start lessons without owning your own drum kit. Indeed, you might be surprised to find how many places have a drum kit that you just might be able to practise upon for a small fee. Local schools, Churches, colleges, universities, music shops and of course local rehearsal studios often have drums that you are able to rent out for an hour or two.
Not at all, I teach students of all abilities. No prior musical experience is needed before your first lesson and I am more than happy to teach you everything that you need to know about playing the drum from the kick drum upwards.
I teach the majority of my lessons from a dedicated teaching space, located on Ascot Road, Moseley, Birmingham, B19 9EL, UK. It has great transport links, enabling students from across the city to be able to attend my lessons. My teaching space has all the equipment we need for our drum lessons and is a great environment to learn within. Click on the map below to bring up my rough location on Google Maps - my full teaching address will be provided upon booking your first lesson.
I am also able to offer home tuition to a small number of students (additional costs for travel time may be charged depending on your location). For more information please get in touch.
You certainly can. I offer non-compulsory courses for grades 1-8, enabling students to gain great achievements as well as bagging some extra UCAS points when applying to university.
Absolutely, there are some great left-handed drummers out there - Dominic Howard (Muse), Phil Collins (Genesis) and Travis Barker (Blink-182) who leads with his left hand on a right-handed kit to name a few. I would be more than happy to teach you to play the drums if you are left-handed.
Wearing ear protection is no bad thing if you are a drummer. Indeed, there are some great in-ear plugs that are not too bulky (or fall off while playing) that also enable sound to pass through at lower levels (i.e. when you pause to talk about the music with a teacher) so you don't have to keep putting them in and out. I am happy to advise more about this during our first lesson - especially when it comes to young learners where the advice is slightly different.
Absolutely, there is a great range of music shops across Birmingham that offer instruments of all budgets. For more information simply check out an article about Music Shops in Birmingham.
